Quilt Remade
This project started with a 10” layer cake and a Twister ruler. I ended up with a hodgepodge of pinwheels with no real focus of interest. After sitting on the shelf for several yeas, this quilt top was repurposed. Looking at the quilt as one solid piece of fabric, I cut it into 3 1/2 inch strips and began with the most basic quilt block: the nine patch, alternating with a nine patch variation: the Ohio Star. I subtracted some focus fabric and expanded the negative space to see how little color could be used to carry out the overall theme. I was asking, “could the observer find continuity in a less continuous pattern?” Two distinct patterns were custom quilted onto the piece and had stitching was added to further reinforce the design.
This quilt measures 58 inches by 76 inches.
